The Rose Society (The Young Elites #2)- Marie Lu

The Rose Society (The Young Elites, #2)The Rose Society by Marie Lu

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Rose Society has exceeded my expectations. Marie Lu, has done it again. When I finished reading this book I had to stop my reading spree for two days. I could not start another book because this one was swirling and overflowing billions…TRILLIONS of thoughts in my mind. I didn’t know it was possible to love a book so much or for it to end in such a breathtaking way that you had to freaking stop functioning for TWO ENTIRE DAYS.

Adelina is betrayed so many times.
Freaking Enzo comes back to life.
Teren does more than get over his Queen.
Adelina finds a Myth Boy.
Myth Boy is charming and devoted.
Everyone who used to care for Adelina end up Hating her.
WHAT?!

So back to Review.

Adelina shows that she knows she’s badass and has skills in the very beginning. Her illusions are stronger, more powerful and she is BACK. Along with her caring sister.
They build their own badass crew that is going to overthrow the queen and stop the decimation of those scarred from the fever. They manage to get the Magic Magiano who is so very charming and devoted to Adelina. But he steps back to let Adelina have time with her revived love, Enzo.

Enzo is still charming, he has all of his memories and loves Adelina. HOWEVER. He’s not the same. He longs to be back in the netherworld and doesnt even realize it. His eyes don’t have the same intensity and spark. And he can’t be with Adelina without completely dominating her. And of course, he ends up completely destroying Adelina’s good side by leaving her and shattering her heart into a million more pieces.

Teren is obsessed with his Queen. So obsessed that he kills her. I have lost all hope that this guy could be a potential lover of Adelina. He is crazy and I have no idea what to think of him. He’s described as handsome but…where is the charm? What is his value to the story now that he is so utterly broken and crazy. This actually makes me anticipate the next book seeing that he’s still alive. What is he going to do next?

And now (drumroll) for the EPIC and MIND BLOWING ending of the book.

My revenge is complete.
I force a smile onto my face. In the silence, I sit alone on my throne and wait eagerly for all the satisfaction and triumph to hit me. I wait, and wait, and wait.
But it doesn’t come.

Adelina gets everything that she ever wanted but she realizes, this wasn’t what she wanted at all. She is ALONE. She has lost her sister, friends, and anyone who cares about her. She rules with fear. She finds out that her mind is deteriorating with every use of her power. She realizes that the whispers in her head have lead her to this isolated success. Is this even success?

I don’t think there will be another story that can make me feel the loss and pain of a villain like this. I don’t think I can wait for the 3rd book. I NEED IT. This ending isn’t even a cliff hanger. But it leaves me crazed and possibly delusional. Throughout reading this entire novel, I could envision everything so clearly. And I have to admit the voices in Adelina’s head annoyed me a lot. So did the constant appearance of her dead father. But to read the mind of a villain. To know and be able to see her reasoning. And feel all of the calamity brought down upon her once good soul. It’s breathtaking. I had to seriously stop and reread lines from the book. I had to have every word engraved in my mind.

The Young Elites- Marie Lu

The Young Elites (The Young Elites, #1)The Young Elites by Marie Lu

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This story was AMAZING. Marie Lu has seriously outdone herself. I love watching Adelina grow and become her own person. This story is dark and twisted, but I’m sure we all enjoy it like that. It was a GREAT opening to the trilogy(?) and I could not stop thinking about this book. I literally ran to the next book. So, back to Adelina..
Adelina is scarred. Literally. And I love that I am still able to appreciate her character so much. She has a family that doesnt love her anymore and she ends up killing her father with a hidden gift. Her gift of Illusion. We watch her grow fond and care for the other Young Elites. But we also watch her unravel and let the wounds she has reopen and swallow her. We watch her question herself and there is so much internal conflict.
Enzo, our charming Fire Prince is such a leader. A handsome, smart, and charisma oozing leader/lover. I love seeing him with his heart armor defences up and down.
Teren…I dont understand him. But I do like his evil character. He is one of the mains sources of Adelina’s conflict. If we could just move him, she wouldnt be abandoned. But no. Teren stays and heals quickly too. He never dies. But his backstory is interesting and I wonder if he will ever get over the Queen.
It has only just occured to me why these messed up things are happening to Adelina. Why she would be abandoned and hurt so badly so many times. She is strong. But only so many people can take the wrath of so many painful events. Adelina is special. Her story is the story of the rise of a Villain. How she came to be. Its a whole new perspective and I love it. Its so new. Its Amazing.
Shes had her first kill, her second too. Her illusions are pushing her. The whispers in her head stronger. The death in the end tears her apart. And what really pushes her, is when she loses the ones she loves again.
Leaving only Adelina and her sister against the world.

Overall, if you havent read this book yet….WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! This story is one of a kind and I dont think my heart strings have been pushed around this much before. The society is unique. We get a good view of this new world and all of its terrifying glory. The character Adelina has so much thought and detail put into her. Everyone has a past that explains their character in depth. And the PLOT. Oh my.. There is no PLOT like this anywhere else. When I finished this book, I had to question how such terrible things could happen. And it left me wanting more.

The Heir (The Selection #4)- Kierra Cass

The Heir (The Selection, #4)The Heir by Kiera Cass

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Refreshing! However not as good as the books before. The only moments I sincerely enjoyed were when there were looks into America and Maxon’s current life. Like how he just followed behind her wherever she went when it was just the two of them and there was no official or royal announcement to make. But otherwise, I felt like I was wasting my time reading the book.
The characters like Henri, Ean, Hale, and Erik were very fun to watch as they showed their personalities and such. But there wasn’t enough of them to really get me worked up for a character. Eadlyn is too stubborn and has no reason. She uses the boys and doesn’t really have a personality. She doesn’t have the strength a character needs to sustain interest in a story. I want more action to occur but there was none. All she does is act rude and self-centered. Her character annoys me. She is the exact opposite of America. But too little of America is in her. If we could just fuse America’s kindness and Eadlyn’s overwhelming pride..I think we could create one reasonable future queen.

The One (The Selection #3)- Kiera Cass

The One (The Selection, #3)The One by Kiera Cass

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

SPOILERS:
The ending was truly great! Everything ties in and makes sense. I came to realize more about all of the characters and see them in new lights. I felt extremely touched by the depth of the love between America and Maxon. There were many conflicts that went on throughout the story but it all made it stronger.
Celeste, the character closest to being a antagonist, comes clean of her feelings and expresses herself truthfully. I never thought I would like her character so much, but I did. She gives off the feeling of a big sister full of capability and confidence. I was extremely disappointed to see her death so suddenly at the end.
Some of the biggest obstacles that America was given are: the loss of Marlee, the rebels attack, Maxon’s father hating her, the death of her father, and the loss of Maxon’s trust. Marlee is America’s bestfriend throughout the entire story. To see Marlee be caned for her “treason” is truly heartbreaking for me. And America’s reaction to it proves the true devotion she has for Marlee and the sign that she knows that there must be change. Maxon’s father also has a huge dislike towards America for all of her “rebellious” actions towards the current state of the government and how Maxon’s father deals with people who don’t agree with him. Afterwards, there is the death of her father, who is a caring and compassionate man. This causes America to come home for a while and really think about her role in the palace and to her family. She also learns her father is a Northern rebel. Soon after she returns, Maxon expresses his love for her as sincerely as possible only to see her and Aspen close together. This giving him the wrong idea makes him be cold hearted towards her. She clearly expresses that she realizes that he is the one for her but he turns her away and ignores her. Only to have a Southern rebel attack that kills many and reveals Maxon’s true feelings towards her.
The scene where a southern rebel tries to shoot America is where I started to cry. All of a sudden, the cold hearted Maxon throws himself in the way of the bullet, protecting America. She runs to him and in his “last” breaths tells her that he always loved her and she needs to know that. That his heart was only for her to break and he would be content with only her living if it had to be that way. That scene truly made me burst into tears because I could literally feel the sincerity and rawness in his words.
But in the end everything works out! Marlee and Woodwork live a happy life together inside the palace, Maxon marries America, and Aspen finds love with Lucy. Although there are many sad deaths, I feel that there are more good than bad. I think that the death of Celeste, Anne, the King and Queen were a bit sudden. It was like clearing away any possible problems in the future. Celeste for her previous evils. Anne for her love of Aspen and conflict with Lucy. The King for being a tyrant. And the Queen was a truly passionate and kind character, however her death is described as sacrificing herself for the king selflessly and then he died after with her. I think this represents the strength of the love between the two and what the love between Maxon and America would be like.

The Elite (The Selection #2)

3. The only reason why I gave this book a rating of 3 is because there was no huge turn of events or anything of the sort. It was just finding out more about Maxon’s past, the King’s true self, and drama between the contestants. I’m sure this is all going to lead to an amazing next book now that we have more information and things about the plot built up more strongly. But I was still hoping for more action and America actually doing something rebellious. I know at the end she talked of overturning the caste system but that still isn’t enough action and thriller for me. However, I must say there is a good romance and suspense around it.
America becomes more aware of her surroundings and more compassionate about her possible role as princess. She has some rash decisions that cost Maxon, but their love still goes strong. Maxon becomes closer with other contestants which confuses America along the way. But he reveals some of his dark secrets with America and loses her trust in the end. Aspen is caring for her as well as possible but is rejected by her. His character really starts to show that he will always be there for her.
The Rebels are becoming fiercer and America thinks that she has figured out what the Northerners want,— books. The Southerners continue to be violent and it’s only a matter of time before they harm someone America truly cares about. Apparently they want the selection to end and possibly something else. I was hoping for more action and actual conflict but I am hoping that I can get more of that in the next book since this book was so…not thrilling.

The Selection: Kiera Cass

10507293I began this book while having no clue what it was about. I only began reading it because it was a series that seemed to be gaining fame. But in the end, I was not disappointed. The setting is in the future after World War 3 and during a time where we go back to having a monarchy. The story follows America Singer, a class 5, who is selected to be one of the 35 candidates to be the Prince’s bride. I actually really like the idea of the new social order because it does seem unique. It is obviously not an original idea but more of an innovated one. All of the setting actually gives a purpose for the protagonists and their motives.
America Singer is a straightforward and understanding character, I don’t find myself frustrated by her actions too much. She cares deeply for her family and for those who are loyal to her. Although she can be a bit tempered, she has a understandable reason for it. Prince Maxon is described as boring at first, but I enjoyed learning more about his character. He seems very caring and devoted. His character is charismatic and I would like to know more about him..because he can’t just be all rainbows and sunshine. Lastly, is Aspen Leger, who is America’s first love. He originally is class 6 (Servant) but he moves up by the end of the book. But I feel a bit annoyed by his pride and such sometimes. He has reasons but he just doesn’t reel me in.
All the rebels are making me curious too. The Northerners and Southerners have reasons they want to bring down the royals. But why? The Northerners appear to be searching for something. But what? and the Southerners are for blood. It’s not really as frightening since we have not been shown anything much of what they do. But I am curious about their motives.
I do like the other bridal contestants and their contributions to the story. Celeste is the closest to an antagonist we get and she seems very snobby and self-centered. I would like to see how she is going to continue to play out her role in the next book because all she has done so far is being mean to the contestants. Marlee is a kind soul and America’s closest friend out of all of the contestants. But I really want to know what her secret is? Why is she still in the competition if she doesn’t like Maxon? I feel like The Selection is a great opening for the series and that all the smaller details, set ups and information here will lead to a bigger plot and deeper storyline by the end.
